Further training workshops for teachers with insights into stem cell research

Two courses on continuing education for schoolteachers in biology organized by the Stem Cell Network NRW took place in 2023. Once again, interest in the events was high, meaning that the offer is to be expanded in the future. For the first time, there was a training course with advanced content that built on the basic knowledge from previous basic events.

It is often difficult for schoolteachers to keep up to date with developments in the biomedical field. On the one hand, this is due to the complexity of the subject matter and, on the other hand, to the rapid scientific progress and expansion of knowledge and thus the relevant research topics. The UniStem Day is already an annual information event for schoolchildren that conveys various aspects of stem cell research in a practical way; a corresponding format for teachers has been lacking until now.

The Stem Cell Network NRW aims therefore to offer teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia access to all facets of the topic of stem cells through a continuing education program. Building onto the first teacher training course in 2022, the Stem Cell Network NRW will further develop and consolidate the offer. Therefore in 2023 for the first time a basic training course was supplemented by an advanced training that built on the knowledge gained in the previous training. The training course on the basics of stem cells in May was organized by Dr. Nina Graffmann, while the event with advanced content, which combined the topic of stem cells with the related topic of "genome editing", was offered by Prof. Dr. Nilima Prakash in November. We would like to express our sincere thanks for the commitment of our members in this offer to bring the topic of stem cells closer to teachers in NRW.

There will be further training courses for teachers again next year, which will be announced on the website of the Stem Cell Network NRW
