Once again, the yearly study day for the Q1 class took place at the Kopernikus-Gymnasium Rheine the day before the report cards were issued. As part of a long-standing cooperation with the Stem Cell Network NRW, a team from the coordination office was on site to provide exciting insights into stem cell research for the students of basic and advanced biology courses. First, Dr. Sira Groscurth and Dr. Benjamin Huppert gave overviews of biomedical stem cell research as well as central ethical and legal questions in interactive lectures and a quiz. Afterwards, the students worked in small groups to develop assessments of different scenarios, e.g. the use of stem cells in drug testing or the treatment of diabetes, but also of treatment offers involving so-called "unproven therapies". Finally, the results were presented to all participants and discussed with teachers and the team of the Stem Cell Network NRW.
We greatly appreciate the excellent cooperation with the Kopernikus-Gymnasium and the interest of the students in stem cell research. We will jointly organize the study day again in 2021.
