The Department of Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery – Burn Center is involved in basic, preclinical and clinical research. The focus is on research into the basics of wound healing, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the context of burns and sepsis and, as the most important focus, the development of new strategies for regenerative medicine, the so-called Tissue Engineering of different tissues. Using mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissue (from our patients and from different animal studies with wild-type and genetically modified organisms), we are investigating their use and possible manipulations to improve outcomes in the context of natural vs. delayed tissue regeneration during wound healing, and for in in vitro and in vivo generation of soft (fat and muscle) and bone tissue and peripheral nerves.
