Surgical Research is an integral section at the Bergmannsheil Surgical Clinic. Clinically relevant matters are handled by an interdisciplinary team comprising physicians, biologists, physicists and chemists. Research ranges from applied material science for the development and testing of new biomaterials to new possibilities provided by nanotechnology to the regenerative medicine which includes the use of autologous stem cells for possible new therapies such as traumatic spinal cord injuries. In this regard, the establishment of methods which allows a clinical implementation are particularly relevant to us, since it represents an important requirement for clinical use, an approval procedure and for quality assurance. The researchers use a broad spectrum of methods ranging from cell biology, confocal laser scanning microscopy to electron microscopy on diverse current projects from stem cell research to neurotraumatology.
