The interdisciplinary working group with partners from natural sciences, medicine and engineering has main research activities in the areas of (i) mesenchymal stem cells in tissue regeneration, (ii) analyses of stem cell/biomaterial interactions and (iii) development of three-dimensional constructs for bone and cardiovascular tissue engineering. Our standardised biomaterial test platform serves as screening platform for suitable biomaterials for tissue reconstruction. An innovative, biomaterial-based recruitment system for endogenous mesenchymal stem cells was successfully tested in an animal model. In general, we use bioreactors and complex co-culture models as well as innovative biomaterials. Besides methods in cell biology and molecular biology, data are analyzed with bioinformatic tools. For translation of three-dimensional constructs, we prove funcionality in large animal models (sheep).
