Workshop on translation in stem cell research: biomaterials, bioprocess engineering and GMP

04/11/2024   News

On April 9, 2024, the third workshop in our series of events on the topic of translation took place at Essen University Hospital. In this edition, the focus was not only on stem cell research but also on related areas that are becoming increasingly important in the translation of research results from stem cell research into medical products and therapies. To this end, we invited specialists from these fields from NRW and the Benelux region to provide insights into current trends in their specialist areas and how these could influence stem cell research in the future.

Teilnehmende Translationsworkshop 9.4.24

Prof. Dr. Peter Dubruel from the University of Ghent gave a presentation on how the latest findings from the fields of biomaterials and polymers can be used to create optimal conditions for cultivating different types of stem cells. Prof. Dr. Martijn van Griensven from the University of Maastricht presented impressive results from the field of bone regeneration with mesenchymal stem cells, which are already being used as individual healing trials. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jørgen Magnus from RWTH Aachen University showed how research questions on the future scaling of stem cell production are being addressed at his Chair of Bioprocess Engineering. Finally, Prof. Dr. Sven Stegemann from DWI - Leibniz Joint Lab fiT presented the challenges for pre-competitive translation of stem cell research in GMP environments.

The event was rounded off by a discussion between all speakers on the future of translation in stem cell research and the challenges facing the field. Following on from the discussion, a follow-up event is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024.
