Registration is open: Scandalous or visionary? Replacement organs from chimeras and Petri dishes

09/13/2019   News

On 17.10.2019, neuroscientists Prof. Dr. Sandra Blaess and Vira Iefremova discuss controversial experiments on human-animal chimeras, miniature organs, and the future of organ replacement with ethicist and theologian Prof. Dr. Hartmut Kreß at RheinBühne Bonn.

In 2018, 10,000 people waited for a donor organ in Germany alone, while only 3100 organs were available. Reports about human replacement organs that, in the future, could be bred in animals or test tubes raise hope, but also unease. How far has research actually progressed? Will human-animal hybrid beings soon be born in Japan? Are human livers, kidneys or even brains already growing in labs? And: What should we make of such prospects from an ethical perspective?

The Stem Cell Network NRW cordially invites everyone to discuss these questions with our experts at the Pint of Science Festival. The Bonn neuroscientists Prof. Dr. Sandra Blaess and Vira Iefremova, as well as ethicist and theologian Prof. Dr. Hartmut Kreß will offer brief insights into current research, followed by plenty of time for questions. Talks and discussion will be in German. Further information on the event can be found here.
