Dieter Birnbacher elected member of the Board of Trustees

The General Assembly elected Professor Birnbacher as representative for the field of ethical, legal and social aspects research.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h c. Dieter Birnbacher was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Dortmund from 1993-1996, and at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf from 1996-2012. From 1994 to 2006, he was a member of the Standing Commission on Organ Transplantation of the German Medical Association, as well as a member of the Central Ethics Committee of the German Medical Association from 2004-2019, and its chairman from 2012 to 2016. Among other offices, Birnbacher is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and Vice-President of the German Society for Humane Dying (DGHS). The Stem Cell Network NRW is delighted that Professor Birnbacher will accompany the network with his ample experience as a medical ethicist.

The Board of Trustees was set up as an advisory body when the Stem Cell Network NRW association was founded. It has five members and advises the General Assembly and the other bodies of the association. The board is composed of one representative of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and one representative each from the fields of biomedicine, ELSA (Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects), industrial applications, and public research funding.
