Dialog Event: „At the Translational Threshold for Stem Cell Therapy”

The German Stem Cell Act will celebrate its 20^th anniversary in 2022. In view of the considerable social, technological, and political progress since then, it is an appropriate occasion to take stock of the situation and to venture a joint look into the future. The one-day event will bring together representatives from scientific research, clinical practice, politics, and regulatory authorities for a shared discussion and to provide a comprehensive overview of possible reform needs.

The program of the event is divided into three main topics, each of which forms a separate block and will be concluded by a panel discussion. The first focal point will deal with conflicting concepts of embryos in different areas of legislation and will include a lecture by Prof. Dr. Henning Rosenau on the "Distortions in the Legal Protection of Prenatal Life", a lecture by Prof. Dr. Helmut Frister "On the Double Standard in German Embryo Protection Law", and a lecture by Prof. Dr. Michael von Wolff entitled "Embryo Protection Law = Child Endangerment Law? Considerations of Various Legal Regulations of Reproductive Medicine".

The second part of the event will be devoted to legal or regulatory obstacles to translation and will include a lecture by Prof. Dr. Hans Schöler on "The Regulatory View of Translational Stem Cell Research", a lecture by Prof. Dr. Tade Spranger entitled "The Saint-Nicholas-Day Decision and the Translational Prohibition of the StZG", and a contribution on the topic of approval of ATMPs.

The third part will center on a European legal comparison and the outlooks on further developments. There will be a lecture by Prof. Dr. Dieter Sturma on "Ethical Guard Rails of Future-oriented Stem Cell Research", a lecture by Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Dederer on "Stem Cell Research from a comparative Law Perspective: A Look beyond the Horizon" and a lecture by Prof. Dr. Bettina Schöne-Seifert entitled "What should Science be allowed to do? A small Wish List".

The event „At the Translational Threshold for Stem Cell Therapy” will be held in German. Participation is free of charge. Further information, the complete program and the possibility to register will be published on the website of the Stem Cell Network NRW in the coming weeks.
