It is often difficult for teachers teaching at schools to keep up to date with developments in the biomedical field. On the one hand, this is due to the complexity of the subject matter, and on the other hand, to the rapid progress of the state of knowledge and thus of the relevant research questions. For schoolchildren, the UniStem Day is already an annual information event that conveys various aspects of stem cell research in a practical way; for teachers, a corresponding format has been lacking until now.
The Stem Cell Network NRW has therefore set itself the goal of offering teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia access to the topic of stem cells in all its facets through an advanced education program. This year's education event is intended to be the starting signal for a permanent training program for teachers. The education event on 27.09. took place virtually and was organized by Prof. Edda Tobiasch. Over 90 minutes, Ms. Tobiasch gave good insights into basics, applications and ethical problems in the field of stem cells and involved the participants, who showed keen interest, in an open format.
Due to the great response, the Stem Cell Network NRW is considering offering further advanced education events for teachers in the future.
